Owner Comments:
I found this 1981 GMC Street Coupe
stepside at a cheap local used car lot of all places. The first picture is
of the way it looked when I purchased it. When I first passed by the
truck, a couple of things caught my eye...the painted bumpers and it had the
original BFGoodrich Radial T/A spare underneath. Upon further inspection
and a test drive, I looked in the glove box and there was the Z77 option code
"street coupe equipment". I couldn't hardly believe what I had found!
The car lot didn't realize what it was other than it was a sharp truck...and I
got an incredible deal on it. It is loaded with probably every
available option: 305 4bbl, auto, leather buckets, console, factory tachometer,
gauges, dual tanks, power windows and power locks, rear sliding window, cold
A/C, power steering and power brakes, tilt, cruise, and intermittent wipers.
I took off the incorrect tube grill, cheesy stripe, rear step bumper, and put in
a factory grill, rear bumper, and had the bottom of the truck painted with the
correct charcoal metallic. I had the Street Coupe stripe reproduced as
close to original as possible by a local sign company called The Very Idea.
I would like to thank Alex Millar in Canada who has an 81 GMC Street Coupe
fleetside (same colors) on this website for his information and pictures to help
me reproduce the stripe and other details about this extremely rare truck.
I am still looking for an original GMC tailgate for it,
and plan to restore the wood bed eventually as well. A definite keeper.
