Chevy Identification Numbers |
If you have a small block Chevy engine,
and need to identify any parts you have laying around, or maybe the engine that is in your
truck, I think you will find the pages below invaluable.
Block Casting Numbers:
These numbers are located on the drivers
side of the engine, at the back of the head on the transmission mounting flange. If
the engine is still in the truck it will be a little hard to see it.
Block Suffix Codes:
The suffix numbers are located on the pad
in front of the passenger head, at the mating surface between the head and the
block. If your block has been decked to help raise the compression or just to true
up the head mounting surface, the numbers may have been removed during the process.
Head Casting Numbers:
The number you need is located on top of
the head, in the center. So this means you will have to remove the valve cover if it
is not already off.
Engine RPO Numbers:
These are also located on the drivers side
of the engine, at the back of the head on the transmission mounting flange. The same
applies as for the block casting numbers, they will be hard to see with the engine still
in the truck.
Engine Summary 1970 - Current:
A comprehensive list of engine
specifications, such as bore & stroke, HP & torque ratings, compression ratio and
the induction system they might have came with.
RPO Menu:
List's all the GM RPO numbers and their
descriptions. The RPO's are on the label on the glove box door. A very useful
page.
I would like to thank Mike Maciolek of MadMike's North Georgia Classic Camaro, for letting me use some of his Chevy ID numbers. If you have a need to know anything about Camaros he is the man. |
